Toddlers
2 year olds
At Netherfield Pre-school our 2-year-old group is a warm, calm space where children begin to develop their social skills, confidence and independence. We know this age brings huge emotional and developmental change, so we focus on gentle, responsive care that helps each child feel safe and understood.
Children in this group usually spend time in the main preschool room, joining in with the wider group and enjoying a broad range of activities. However, we also provide a smaller, purpose-resourced room if they need a quieter space — for example, if the main room feels too busy or overwhelming. Here, a familiar key person is always close by to offer comfort and encouragement. The smaller room is equipped with age-appropriate resources that support physical development and rich sensory experiences, allowing children to explore at their own pace in a calm, secure environment.
Free play runs throughout the session — indoors and outdoors — so children can follow their interests while practitioners support language, imaginative play and fine motor skills through stories, songs and hands-on activities. Play is the foundation of learning at this age, and our staff use everyday moments to extend vocabulary, spark curiosity and build positive relationships.
We tailor activities to each child’s stage of development, observing closely so we can adapt routines and offer the right support. By working in partnership with families, we ensure every child feels included, valued and ready to thrive.
Typical activities you’ll see in the 2-year-old group include:
-
Sensory trays and messy play (sand, water, play dough)
-
Gross-motor games and outdoor exploration
-
Group story and song times to build early language
-
Simple mark-making and hand-eye coordination activities
-
Role-play and small-world play to encourage imagination
